ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The conference will be simultaneously translated in English and Turkish.

Profile: Turkey The voluntary carbon market is growing rapidly in Turkey and capacity building is crucial for both government agencies and the private sector. Turkey is a leader in producing high standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (VERs) from renewable energy projects. “Voluntary carbon trading projects in Turkey have increased rapidly, reaching 45 from 30 in the first quarter of 2008 and resulting in a greenhouse gas reduction of about 5 million tons and about 20 million Euros in gains” according to the Turkish newspaper, Today's Zaman in March 2009. Turkey ratified the Kyoto Protocol at the beginning of 2009, but its position is uncertain post-2012. Carbon Markets Turkey, South Caucasus & Central Asia will bring key stakeholders together to discuss what opportunities remain in the voluntary carbon market until 2012, and the different possible outcomes for the country post-Kyoto.

Profile: Southern Caucasus The region hosts around 5 registered projects, with another 10 in the pipeline and there is significant potential for more projects under the CDM and JI. At Carbon Markets Turkey, South Caucasus & Central Asia delegates will gain insight into the current CDM/JI progress in these countries and devise strategies to drive future market growth.

Profile: Central Asia The five countries of Central Asia could significantly benefit from the energy efficiency measures and carbon finance under the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation schemes. Although no projects have yet been registered under the CDM from the region, there are around a dozen projects in the pipeline.

SPECIAL GUEST: Egemen BAĞIŞ, Minister of State & Minister for EU Affairs, Turkey
