Networking Evening with BP

TBCCI Networking Evening with BP plc was held on Wednesday, 13 March 2019 at the BP Headquarters in London, where members of the Turkish-British business community met and networked. New members of the TBCCI were introduced to the delegates.

Alderman Emma Edhem, TBCCI Chairman; Deputy Head of Int. Law, Barrister, No5 Chambers talked about TBCCI projects and initiatives; Süleyman Beşli Chief, Commercial Counsellor Turkish Embassy in London spoke about UK-Turkey bilateral economic relations, and Peter Mather, Group Regional President, Europe & Head of Country, UK, BP plc, commented on trends in energy and energy in the context of Brexit.

Turkish Airlines launches direct flights to Ankara

TBCCI Patron Member and 2018 Forum Sponsor Turkish Airlines launches direct flights to Ankara, Turkey’s capital city

The inaugural flight launched on 9th January from London Gatwick to Ankara.

TBCCI Patron Member Turkish Airlines, has launched direct flights from London Gatwick to Ankara on 9th January 2019. The flights will be operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The flagship airline is the only airline to offer direct flights to Turkey’s second largest city and to celebrate the inaugral flight, Turkish Ambassador, Ümit Yalçın joined Turkish Airlines flight crew at London Gatwick Airport.

Celal Baykal, Turkish Airlines General Manager in London and Member of the Board of Directors of TBCCI, said: “Today marks an important day in Turkish Airlines’ history here in the UK, as we commence flights to our capital city Ankara. This new route is being launched in direct response to increased demand from our customers across the country, and is further evidence of our commitment to exceeding passenger needs. We look forward to welcoming people from across the UK on our new route and keeping widen their world with Turkish Airlines.”

Ziraat Bank announces New Government Bonds and Lease Certificates

In order to diversify the borrowing instruments and to broaden investor base, the Ministry of Treasury and Finance of Turkey will issue the Euro-denominated Government bonds and lease certificates to resident and non-resident individual investors (natural persons) starting from September 12th, 2018. The demand for the Securities will be collected in different rounds by Ziraat Bank, Member of the TBCCI, and Ziraat Bank Internet Banking. The issuance and redemptions of the securities will be carried out through Ziraat Bank branches.

Networking Evening with APCO Worldwide

On 7 March 2018, TBCCI organised a Networking Evening at APCO Worldwide premises in Covent Garden, London.

A Patron Member of the Chamber and the host of the evening, APCO Worldwide is an independent global public affairs and strategic communications consultancy.

The event started with opening keynotes. TBCCI Chairman Emma Edhem, CC welcomed TBCCI members and guests and briefly talked about the current developments in Turkish-British economic and political affairs. Ms. Edhem also gave an update on TBCCI projects and initiatives and announced the forthcoming TBCCI events. She then invited Mr. Cem G. Isik, Counsellor and the Deputy Head of Mission at the Turkish Embassy in London to the stage.

Isik talked about the economic and trade relations between the two countries, mentioning that the UK is the 4th biggest FDI country in Turkey and the relations will remain to be strong during and after the Brexit with the UK-Turkey Trade Working Group already established and working towards this goal. Isik also commented on the opportunities Turkey offers for foreign investors in terms of tax exemptions and policies to avoid double taxation.

Next, TBCCI Board Director and the Director of APCO Worldwide Istanbul, Deniz Gungen. gave an in overview of APCO Worldwide and informed about the current developments in Turkey and the Region.

After the opening speeches, TBCCI Chairman, Edhem invited Martin Bennett, the Chief Executive – Turkey of BAE Systems and Celal Baykal, General Manager of the Turkish Airlines London to the stage as the new appointed Directors of the TBCCI Board for their introductions.

Finally, the New Members of the TBCCI, Turkish Airlines, NARS UK Consulting Limited and SRM Business Consulting Limited were introduced to the audience.  Evening concluded with a productive networking session.

New members join TBCCI’s Board of Directors

TBCCI’s board of directors introduced three new board members at its recent networking evening. The three senior executives are Dr. Deniz Gungen of APCO Worldwide, Dr. Martin Bennett of  BAE Systems, and Celal Baykal of Turkish Airlines. Dr. Deniz Gungen | Director | APCO Worldwide

Deniz Gungen is director in APCO Worldwide’s Istanbul office. He leads the pharmaceutical-sector team and provides strategic counsel on regulatory affairs, government relations and advocacy, issues management, market entry, and corporate communications to a variety of clients, among them entities representing energy, finance, insurance, information technologies, retail, paper and NGO interests. Mr. Gungen focuses primarily on orphan drugs and rare diseases in pharmaceutical sector.

Mr. Gungen holds a PhD in political science from Boston University, an MA in global finance, trade and economic integration from the University of Denver and a BA in international relations from Bilkent University. Read more.

Dr. Martin Bennett | Chief Executive – Turkey | BAE Systems

Martin is a senior executive in the defence, aerospace and security sector. From an engineering background he has many years successful experience in international business strategy, market development and campaign management working in international markets across the globe.

In July 2015 Martin took up the role of Managing Director – Central Region based in Abu Dhabi, with responsibility for markets in Central Asia, Turkey, the Middle East and Africa. In October 2016 Martin moved to Ankara to take up the appointment as Chief Executive for Turkey following its designation as one of BAE Systems’ seven strategic markets.

Martin has an MBA from the University of Leicester and has been awarded a Doctorate from the University of Liverpool with his accepted thesis on international industrial alliances. He is married with two children and has interests in golf, football, flying and collecting antique maps. Read more.

Celal Baykal | General Manager – London | Turkish Airlines

Celal Baykal is the General Manager of Turkish Airlines for London within the United Kingdom, who will be celebrating his 12th work anniversary this year at Turkish Airlines. In 2018, Mr Baykal was appointed as the General Manager for London which has one of the busiest flight frequencies amongst the Turkish Airline networks and connects passengers to a variety of Turkish Airlines destinations via Istanbul.

Celal Baykal is a young, vibrant and an active Manager at Turkish Airlines and has been very successful at all stations he has been appointed to. Mr Baykal speaks fluent Turkish, Dutch and English and holds a BA in Business Administration from Istanbul University and a Master in Science of Marketing from Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Member of the Board of Directors and the Treasurer of TBCCI, Mr. Enver Kannur will be speaking at the “Secrets of Business Success in the UK” Seminars on 21-22-23 March 2017 in Istanbul and Bursa, Turkey.
